User Interface Design & Implementation
Define, design, and deliver user interface solution for a 2.5" LCD Screen on cutting edge digital photo printers.
Polaroid contracted RDVO to develop the LCD screen interface for a new line of digital photo printers. The interfaces needed to be easy-to-use and needed to optimize the workflow for new printing technologies. The approach also needed to work in tandem with the product's industrial design approach and maintain consistency with the Polaroid brand.
Working with small-screens-in this case a 2.5" LCD-required different UI development tactics. RDVO worked closely with Polaroid industrial design, technology, and marketing teams, to conduct an initial design audit and gather product requirements.
We developed a "smart" usability testing prototype that allowed users to experience the UI as it would actually perform in a real-world scenario. The design implementation was driven by iterative prototyping, constantly testing concepts for quality, ease-of-use, and performance.
Smart prototypes allow us to simulate GUI performance in real-world cases.
Additional deliverables included device-specific iconography, custom typefaces, and guidance on device controls. We also collaborated with the firmware developers to integrate the UI into final product.
A complete UI specification was delivered, and the team was asked to create consistent design assets and approaches for desktop software, installation CDs, and interactive instructional documentation.
